Universidad De San Carlos

This university was built in 1763. The building survived the earthquake of 1773 but by the end of the 18th century it required renovations as in the other buildings in Antigua. In the present the building stands like a musem, since the University has been translated to the Guatemala City.

Las Capuchinas

One of the most beautiful places in La Antigua is the convent of Las Capuchinas. This structure is partially destroyed and partially in good state. It is divided into a museum and into the offices of the National Council for the Protection of Antigua Guatemala. Beneath the structure lies a subterrean chamber which purpose is unknown.

Catedral

On the east side of the Plaza de Armas, stands the beautiful Catedral of Antigua which was inaugurated in 1680. This cathedral was the replacement of an old one. This church was the largest cathedral in Central America, as many other structures in Antigua, it was damaged by earthquakes but was rebuilt afterwards.

Palace Of The Captains

For more than two centuries, the seat of Spanish colonial government was the Palace Of The Captains. Construction was begun on the original building in 1549, and completed in 1558, but the building has been repeatedly reconstructed and altered following damaging earthquakes.
In 1735 the Casa de la Moneda was inaugurated in this large complex. But most of the structure was destroyed in the 1773 quakes that brought the city to its knees. Today the beautiful arched facade has been restored, and the building houses government, city police, and INGUAT offices, but the present palace is but a small remnant of the former complex. The palace was yet again heavily damaged in the Feb 4, 1976 earthquake.

La Antigua Guatemala

The city of La Antigua was founded in 1543, it was the seat for the spanish government in the Kingdom of Guatemala, which included whole Central America. In history the city has been always striken by earthquakes and was always re-built by the "antigueños".
